It’s already there, it’s already lockable, it’s usually already near power, and it’s shaded. For a permanent GNSS base station, that combination is hard to beat — which is why container-mounted bases have become the default on mine sites, civil projects and renewables construction.Doing it well takes a bit more than putting the receiver on a shelf.Why a container worksIt’s undercover. A ventilated enclosure needs to be out of direct weather, and a container provides that without any additional structure.It’s secure. The container is already locked at night and already part of the site’s security arrangements. A base station inside it inherits that.It’s stable. A container sitting on its corner castings or a prepared pad doesn’t move. That matters, because a base station’s whole job is to sit on a known coordinate.It has power, usually. Compound containers are often already connected to a genset, mains or a solar array, which removes the biggest constraint on a permanent base.It’s shaded. Not cool — a closed container in summer gets hot — but out of direct sun on the equipment itself.Heat is still the main problemA steel box in the sun is a good oven. Container internal temperatures well above ambient are routine through a Queensland or Pilbara summer, and that’s before you add a transmitting radio.So the container solves the weather problem and makes the heat problem worse. Three things help:Ventilate the container itself. Whirlybirds, louvres, or a powered extraction fan. If the container has no air movement at all, nothing you do to the enclosure inside it will be enough.Ventilate the enclosure. A mesh vent panel and a fan cut-out let the enclosure exchange air with the container. A thermostat-controlled fan runs only when it needs to, which matters if the base is on battery and solar.Position sensibly. Away from the sun-facing wall, away from the roof, and not directly above a genset or compressor.Antenna siting is the hard partThe container is the easy bit. The antenna is where container installs get compromised, because the antenna needs a clear view of the sky and the container is a metal box.Practical guidance:Roof mount is the usual answer. A pole or mast on the container roof, braced properly, gets the antenna above the container and clear of surrounding structures.Watch the multipath. A container roof is a large flat conductive surface. An antenna mounted close to it will see reflected signals. Getting the antenna up on a mast rather than sitting it on the roof deck makes a measurable difference.Keep the coax run short and protected. Every metre of feeder is loss, and every unsupported metre is a future failure. Run it in conduit or tray, support it at intervals, and bring it into the enclosure through a bulkhead lead-through rather than a gland.Think about the whole compound. Cranes, light towers, laydown stacks and other containers all move over the life of a project. An antenna position that’s clear on day one can be shadowed by month six.The base coordinate is the thing that has to survive. If the container is ever moved, relevelled or replaced, the antenna position changes and the base is no longer where it thinks it is. Fix the container’s position in the site plan and make sure the site team knows the container can’t be shifted without the survey team being told.Cable entry into the containerContainer walls are corrugated steel, which makes for awkward penetrations. A few conventions that work:Use the existing vent apertures or a purpose-cut and glanded penetration in a flat section, not the corrugation.Seal from the outside, with a hood or drip loop above the entry, so water running down the corrugation doesn’t track in.Bring antenna coax and power in at different points where practical, to keep the DC run away from the feeder.Label everything at both ends. Containers get re-fitted, and unlabelled cable gets cut.Mounting the enclosure insideThe base station enclosure and stand together stand about 1,850 mm. In a standard container that leaves clearance above, and puts the equipment at a workable height.The stand feet are drilled for floor or plinth fixing. Bolting the stand to the container floor is worth doing even where it feels unnecessary — a container gets moved, tilted on a tilt-tray, and shunted, and an unfixed 1.8 m assembly with a battery on it will go over.Where floor space is scarce, the wall-mount version without the stand fixes to the container wall directly, with the battery relocated to a separate mount.Leave working space in front of the door. A full-height hinged door needs room to swing, and someone will eventually need to get in there with both hands and a multimeter.Power and batteryIf the compound has a supply, the base runs off it with a battery for ride-through during genset changeovers and outages. If it doesn’t, solar and a deep cycle battery are the standard answer.Either way, the DC side wants a proper isolator, protection on each circuit, and a battery monitor so the state of charge is visible without a meter. We cover this in more detail in a separate article on powering a permanent base station.The battery mount on the stand puts the battery below the enclosure, clear of the equipment, which keeps the heaviest item low and makes swaps straightforward.Security and accessThe container gives you perimeter security. The enclosure’s full-height door has a hasp for padlocking, which gives you a second layer — useful where a lot of people have container access but only a few should be inside the base station.Padlocking also stops the well-meaning intervention: someone opening the box because a light is flashing, and turning something off.Getting the sizing right before you orderThe most common problem we see is an enclosure sized to the receiver and nothing else. By the time the radio, the charge controller, a modem, the DC distribution and a spare gland run are in there, the box is full and there’s nowhere to put the thing that gets added next year.Before ordering, list every item going inside, with dimensions, and add space for one more.
